18 Buckets of Money: Customized Browsers

Buckets of MoneyFor many people, once they launch a website, they do so thinking that “Ok, now the money will just come rolling in.” Depending upon the business, they may just do very well. But, having spent the best part of the last 20 years working with websites, I can tell you that more often than not, it takes a bit of time. Unfortunately, for many businesses (web or otherwise) the number one reason for failure is under-capitalization. Thus, making money right off the bat serves the long term vision of the business best of all. Because I wanted my customers to do well (and therefore be able to pay their bill), I looked for ways to create alternative revenue streams, while the core business would grow in the time they needed. Over a period of time, I was able to discover eighteen of what became known as the “Buckets of Money”. This is column ten in an eighteen column series… so with that said, on with the show.

On some fronts, this will be the most difficult to pull off, technically. That said, it can also be among the most lucrative. So, do not be
intimidated. Explore what this bucket is about, do an early survey to your constituency and if this seems like it would be well received
get a technical partner to help you out! So, lets talk about browsers.

Everyone knows what a browser is, but did you know that you can have your own? Virtually every browser on the market has a
“SDK” (software development kit) to alter their browser. What could you alter? Well… how about:

  1. Imagine having your own logo spinning in the upper right hand corner, instead of that “e” that Microsoft chose. While this may not add money to your bottom line, if that logo was a major corporation that wants to reach your audience… then it will!
  2. What will the “Home Page” be? Of course it could be your website… but again, money?  What about a specific page inside the site?  One that another company is paying to drive people towards?
  3. Are you familiar with the term, “Bookmarks” or “Favorites”?  The SDK allows you to “pre-load” as many as you want!  WOW!

As cool as I hope you feel this whole column is, and I know this one is just about my favorite, I am about to make it even more cool!
Are you ready?  I just want the suspense to last a bit… but I can barely contain myself… ok, here goes…

You can actually set up this browser to check with you in the future, to ask if you want to add anything, or remove anything!

Ok, now you may be wondering why.  Here is why- by doing so, you can add more bookmarks!  You can change the homepage!
You can add a new piece of software!  What this really means, is additional money!  Your bookmarks could be annual fees, and if
you are not being paid enough, you can remove someone.  Or, if you get a new, higher bid… SELL IT!  A bidding war!  I LOVE IT!
Ok, I admit it, I am almost beside myself in giddiness. Again, look into what you can do and how to capitalize on it all!
